Kollywood and Politics – Never Ending Love Affair

If one looks back at the history of modern politics in Tamil Nadu it is Kollywood which will figure prominently in it. On the eve of a very important Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2016 with May 16th set as the D-Date, We take a look at some of the prominent faces of Tamil Cinema who have impacted the state in politics.

Vindhya, Senthil, Anandaraj, Gundu Kalyanam & C.R. Saraswathi

For the elections 2016 the AIADMK's main ammunition to attack the opposition comes from the Kollywood actresses Vindhya and C.R. Saraswathi and actors Senthil, Anandaraj and Gundu Kalyanam who keep the audiences in splits during their campaigns raking up the dirt on the opposition.

Vagai Chandrasekhar and Imman Annachi

The loyal Vagai Chandrasekhar who has been with the DMK for many decades has atlast been rewarded with an MLA seat and newly joined member Imman Annachi is proving to be quite a draw during the campaigns for the 2016 elections.

Karunaas

Karunaas announced his political foray only a few months back and aligned with the ADMK and the supremo rewarded him with the Thiruvadanai seat immediately and he must be the only lucky person who has got a chance to contest at such a short period of time.

Khushbu

The multilingual leading lady of the nineties first proved she is political material in her stint with the DMK a few years back and now as the National Spokesperson of the Congress Party she is busy drawing the crowds campaigning for her party as well as her erstwhile DMK candidates.

Nagma

The Kadhalan' girl now a major congress campaigner is struggling with her Tamil when campaigning for election 2016 but still draws the crowd.

Namitha

The latest entrant into Tamil Nadu politics Namitha started her baby footsteps by celebrating her birthday with challenged children and also offering her prayers for Jayalalitha to become CM again.

T. Rajendhar

TR a staunch member of the DMK was known for his no holds barred attack on the opposition leaders and he had the guts to even take on the colossal MGR. Later expelled from the DMK, he floated his own party All India Latchiya Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in April 2004.

K.Bhagyaraj

One of India's most celebrated screenwriters, K. Bhagyaraj an avid fan of MGR supported the ADMK and then after his death started MGR Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam' which lasted only for a few months.

Karthick Muthuraman

The Navarasa Nayagan who is so much loved as the evergreen romantic hero of Kollywood is still not seen as a major force in Tamil Nadu politics and he has announced that his Ahila India Naadalum Makkal Katchi will contest in all constituencies. Remains to be seen how serious the people will take him.

Seeman

The actor director's major attraction is his oratory skills and his Naam Tamizhar Katchi is contesting independently in all the constituencies and this elections is the acid test for Seeman.

Sarathkumar

The Samathuva Makkal Katchi leader Sarathkumar after a long stint in politics supporting the DMK and the ADMK on and off has now aligned with Jayalalitha and is contesting from the Tiruchendur constituency in this elections.

Vijayakanth

The Puratchi Kalaigniar as he was fondly known during his heyday as the premier action hero of Kollywood formed his Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK),in 2005 and surprised many by winning one seat and garnering 10% of the voters and securing 10.1% in this Lok Sabha election. After slowly making inroads this election is going to be a major test for the Captain but his popularity among the masses proves that he will be a major force this time too.
